Intel and Ericsson to Build Global Cloud RAN Technology Center
As two of the most innovative companies in the global ICT field, Intel and Ericsson are integrating R&D resources to jointly develop high-performance Cloud RAN solutions. The two companies have established a technology center in California, U.S., focused on the value delivered by Intel technologies and Ericsson Cloud RAN, including: improving energy efficiency and network performance, reducing time to market, and capturing new business opportunities such as enterprise applications .
The Ericsson-Intel Technology Center is currently operational. The center's current focus includes related projects such as power management and performance planned for this year, as well as joint work related to Cloud RAN Containerized Network Function (CNF) 1 application software running on future generations of processing platforms.
Dan Rodriguez, Intel corporate vice president and general manager of the Network Platforms Group, said: "The transformation to a fully virtualized cloud-native network has brought tremendous innovation and extreme agility, and this transformation is now extending to the RAN. We will build on The Technology Center expands Intel and Ericsson's collaboration and demonstrates how virtualized RAN enables new levels of automation, agility and sustainability."
Per Narvinger, Head of Network Product Area, Ericsson, said: "Cloud RAN technology and virtualization have enormous potential to impact future networks. Through this technology center, we will be able to accelerate the implementation of Cloud RAN technology in areas such as energy efficiency and performance, while reducing time to market. time."
The establishment of the Ericsson-Intel Technology Center is the latest of many initiatives Ericsson has already launched around Cloud RAN and has enriched its product portfolio. Ericsson launched the Cloud RAN product in October 2020 and established the Ericsson Open Lab in March 2021 with the goal of advancing virtualized 5G RAN technology with Ericsson's Cloud RAN customers and ecosystem partners including Intel development of.
Ericsson has delivered robust high-performance 5G RAN solutions to service providers while planning future network topologies and ideologies. Intel has been helping industries transform communications networks for more than a decade and offers a broad portfolio of products and software solutions for processing and acceleration that are currently deployed, including Intel Xeon processors.
Building on a multi-year product design effort, the technology center will enhance the current R&D efforts of the two companies and help CSPs better plan their future roadmaps and products.
